All you need to know about R32 refrigerant
When it comes to air conditioning, refrigerant plays a vital role in your equipment’s performance, its energy efficiency and its environmental impact. R32 refrigerant, already widely available around the world, is now coming to Canada.
What is R32, and why is it so important? This article explores the features, benefits and considerations of using R32.
What is R32 refrigerant?
A refrigerant is a substance or blend of substances used in a refrigeration system to absorb heat from an environment to be cooled and release it elsewhere, usually outside the refrigerated space.
R32 is a more recent alternative to refrigerants such as R22 and R410A. It is used mainly in residential air conditioning systems and was introduced in 2012 in Japan by Daikin.
R32 refrigerant, highlights :
The R32 refrigerant has several significant characteristics:
- Proven reliability: in use since 2012.
- Worldwide use: present in nearly 130 countries.
- Wide adoption: in use in 230 million units*.
- Simplicity and easy recycling: made from a single component, easy to clean and reuse.
- Energy efficiency: reduces energy consumption by 10% compared with R22.
- Improved performance: approximately 12% more efficient than systems using R-410A.
- Environmental impact: Global Warming Potential – GWP assessed at 675, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared with other refrigerants.
More detailed advantages of R32
Energy efficiency :
R32 has a higher coefficient of performance (COP) than older refrigerants, which means it requires less energy to provide the same amount of cooling.
Reduced environmental impact:
The Global Warming Potential (GWP) of R32 is 675, which is significantly lower than R410A with a GWP of 2088. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Better thermal performance :
R32 offers improved thermal performance, which translates into greater efficiency in air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Installation of smaller systems:
Thanks to its efficiency, R32 enables the use of smaller, lighter units that are just as efficient.
Globally proven efficiency:
Although only recently available in Quebec, R32 refrigerant has been in use for over 12 years worldwide, with more than 230 million units installed.
Cheaper solution:
Less expensive than R410A, R32 is a cost-effective solution for your wallet. Furthermore, systems using R32 generally require a smaller refrigerant charge, which can reduce costs and environmental impact.
Drawbacks and considerations
Slightly flammable :
R32 is classified as slightly flammable (safety class A2L). Although this does not pose a major hazard under normal conditions of use, extra precautions must be taken when installing and maintaining systems.
Equipment compatibility :
Not all air conditioning and refrigeration systems are compatible with R32. It is essential to check equipment compatibility with your Confort Expert advisor before proceeding with any conversion or installation.
Training and certification :
Technicians must be properly trained and certified to handle R32 safely due to its flammable properties. Confort Expert’s highly trained teams are qualified to install your R32 systems.
Essential Questions Before Choosing an HVAC Company in Greater Montreal
What are the alternatives to R32?
R32 will replace R410A. Although production of products using R-410 will cease on January 1, 2025, it will still be possible to install R-410 items already in production. Other refrigerants have also been designed to replace R410A, such as R454B.
The major alternative to R32 is R454B. Although it contains some R32, its main advantage is its non-flammability. R454B also has an excellent GWP of 466. In terms of performance, R454B is similar to R410A.
With both having a positive impact on the environment compared to R-410, and offering their own advantages, the choice of refrigerant will be up to each manufacturer.
