Grants for converting an oil heating system
Chauffez Vert
Chauffez Vert offers significant financial support to encourage the conversion of heating systems fuelled by oil or propane to more ecological and sustainable solutions using renewable energies such as electricity. Eligible heating systems include not only central heating systems, but also water heaters, enabling homeowners to modernize their infrastructure while benefiting from financial assistance to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve long-term energy savings.
Amount: The allocated sum depends on the type of housing and heating system but can reach $1,275 for a heating system, and $250 for a water heater.
Note that some municipalities also offer their own programs to encourage conversions.
Eligibility: Homeowners must be existing Hydro-Québec clients, and conversion work must be done with qualified contractors like Confort Expert.
Oil-to-Heat Pump Affordability Program
If your income is equal to or below the median income after taxes, you may be eligible for the Oil-to-Heat Pump Affordability Program. This program is designed to help owners of oil-heated homes choose a more environmentally friendly and economical heating solution.
Amount: This program offers up to $10,000 to homeowners currently heating their homes with oil. This amount is intended to finance the installation of an eligible electric heat pump, allowing for a transition to more environmentally friendly and economical heating.
Eligibility: OHPA program criteria include proof of purchasing 500 litres of oil in the past 12 months (instead of 1,000 litres), a broader range of eligible heat pumps (air and geothermal), and an increased income threshold to account for inflation. A certified professional like Confort Expert must undertake the work to ensure the new system’s effectiveness.
Grants from Énergir and Hydro-Quebec
Grant for Dual-Energy System – Electricity-Natural Gas from Énergir and Hydro-Quebec
The dual energy grant aims to promote the installation of heating systems combining electricity and natural gas to improve residences’ energy efficiency. This generous grant is available when you purchase a dual-energy heating system, even if you keep your current appliance! However, the offer is topped up if you also need to replace your gas furnace.
For a forced-air system, the solution is simply to add an eligible heat pump, whereas for a hot-water system, we need to add an electric boiler to the existing system.
You’ll then be able to use electricity as your main source of energy, and natural gas as a backup source of heat during the coldest weather – a period when electricity demand “explodes”!
In addition to reducing your greenhouse gas emissions, this solution provides you with all the energy you need at the lowest possible cost, thanks to Hydro-Québec’s dual-energy rate.
Amount: You can receive a grant of $6,000 for a single family, semi-detached, row house, or condo with a separate heating system. The grant can even be up to $10,000 providing you meet several other criteria.
Eligibility: To be eligible, you must be a residential client of Energir, the work must be performed by a certified contractor like Confort Expert, and installed systems must be new and meet the program’s efficiency standards to maximize energy savings and emissions reductions.
Hydro-Quebec LogisVert Program
With the LogisVert program, you can obtain financial support of up to $6,700 to purchase and install a high efficiency heat pump. This program aims to encourage homeowners in Quebec to adopt environmentally friendly heating systems to reduce their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Amount: You can get up to $120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8°C for an efficient heat pump. If you combine the purchase of a very high efficiency heat pump with insulation work, the incentive increases to $140 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8°C.
Eligibility: Homeowners must use a qualified contractor for installation and meet the energy performance criteria defined by the program. Here is the list of admissible heat pumps and other eligibility criteria on the LogisVert website. This grant can be combined with other provincial or federal financial aid.
Other energy-efficiency grants to reduce your heating costs
Rénoclimat
The Rénoclimat program offers financial assistance to encourage owners of single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, or small residential buildings (up to three stories) to undertake energy efficiency improvements. This grant does not enable you to upgrade your heating system, but it does enable you to optimize your heating costs, since the eligible renovations concern the insulation and airtightness of your home.
Amount: The amounts vary based on the improvements made, including up to $20,000 for homeowners and $40,000 for owners of duplexes, triplexes, or multiple-unit residential buildings.
Eligibility: Homeowners must undergo an energy assessment with a blower-door test carried out by certified advisor before starting work.
New Features: Starting November 1, 2024, a fee of $150 (taxes extra) will be required for an energy assessment before work begins. This amount will be reimbursed upon the disbursement of the financial aid.
Other Changes: Since May 1, 2024, several adjustments have been made to the Rénoclimat program. Additional funds have been allocated for insulation and sealing work, replacing doors and windows, as well as installing mechanical systems.
Canada Green Home Loan
The application for the Canada Green Homes Grant is now closed, however, the Canada Green Homes Loan remains available. It offers interest-free loans ranging from $5,000 to $40,000, with a repayment period of 10 years. This loan is designed to help homeowners finance essential energy-efficient renovations to improve their home’s efficiency, reduce their carbon footprint and achieve long-term energy savings.
