What the End of the Chauffez Vert Rebate Program Means for Your Oil Heating System

Since 2013, the Chauffez Vert program has helped more than 64,000 households in Québec replace their oil or propane heating systems with electric systems. The government recently announced the end of this rebate program.

In addition, the Regulation respecting oil-fired heating appliances, currently in effect, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by progressively prohibiting the installation and repair of certain oil-fired heating appliances and water heaters.

The message is clear: if your home is still heated with oil, now is the time to switch to an electric system before it’s too late to benefit from the rebate.

How can you qualify for the rebate? What are the deadlines? What happens if your oil heating system breaks down? In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know about the end of the Chauffez Vert program and how to convert your heating system.

Regulatory Compliance: What the Regulation on Oil-Fired Heating Appliances States

The government prohibits:
• Any replacement of an oil system, even with a new appliance, as of December 31, 2023.
• Any repair of a boiler or warm-air furnace running on oil that is more than 20 years old, or a water heater more than 10 years old.
• Certain major repairs (e.g.: combustion chamber, heat exchanger), even before reaching those ages.

In short, in the event of a breakdown, if your system is too old, it will legally be non-repairable, you will be required to convert your system.

What You Need to Know: Dates, Conditions, Steps

  • Deadline: all applications must be submitted before March 31, 2026.
Work completed before the application: conversion work (removal of the boiler/furnace and tank, installation of a new electric or renewable-energy system) must be completed before submitting the form.
Mandatory declaration: the complete removal of the oil or propane tank is required and must be replaced by an electric or renewable-energy system.
Qualified contractor: To be eligible for Chauffez Vert, the work must be performed by a qualified contractor with an RBQ licence, such as Confort Expert.
Eligible work: electric heating, heat pumps, electric boilers, renewable-energy systems, according to program requirements.

The Benefits of Converting Your Heating System Before March 31, 2026

  1. Take advantage of financial assistance — up to $11,275

By converting your system through Chauffez Vert, you may receive up to $1,275 to replace your oil-fired system.

But that’s not all, when combined with the federal OHPA program (Oil to Heat Pump Affordability), you may receive an additional $10,000.

Finally, you may also apply for the LogisVert rebate to further reduce your costs.

Altogether, these programs significantly lower the cost of conversion and make your new heating system much more accessible and affordable.

  1. Avoid heating breakdowns and keep your home warm all winter

Oil heating systems are often aging, and in the event of failure, a contractor may no longer be legally allowed to repair the system. By converting now, you avoid the risk of being left without heat in the middle of winter if an irreparable failure occurs. You can take advantage of available rebates while having the time, without urgency, to choose the equipment that best fits your needs, alongside a qualified and trusted contractor.

  1. Better energy efficiency and long-term savings

An electric or renewable-energy system is generally more efficient, helping reduce heating bills and improve overall home comfort. By installing a heat pump, you benefit from a reliable, efficient system that keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer!

  1. Environment and health

Eliminating oil or propane helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a concrete action in the fight against climate change.
