The power of UV rays

The term “UV rays” often brings to mind other words, namely, “sunscreen” and “skin cancer.” And we’ve all heard about UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging, as well as powerful UVB rays, which effect the outermost layers of the skin and cause, among other things, painful sunburns.

Lately, however, you may have been hearing a lot about UVC (ultraviolet-C) rays. These rays are also present in sunlight but don’t reach us because they can’t make it past the ozone layer. However, UVC rays can be artificially generated and used to kill viruses.

Specifically, this type of UV ray has been shown to be effective in eliminating microbes and virus particles from surfaces. This includes coronavirus particles. In fact, specially designed UVC lamps and similar machines are currently being used to disinfect medical equipment. Exposing a surface or object to UVC rays for a few minutes eliminates viruses, bacteria, microbes and fungi.
