Why do some people always feel hot and others always feel cold?

It’s a scenario that plays out in countless homes and workplaces: one person complains they feel too cold and another says they feel too hot. Meanwhile, the thermostat sits at a comfortable 21°C or 22°C. Indeed, some people are quick to crank up the heating while others have a tendency to turn on the air conditioning But have you ever wondered why? The team at Ateliers G. Paquette in Montreal decided to explore this enigma. Here’s what we discovered.

Why do some people always feel cold?

If a person feels chilly around the clock, regardless of the indoor temperature, this could be linked to one of the following medical issues:

  • A diet lacking in fat
  • Iron deficiency (anemia) or vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Dehydration
  • Low muscle mass
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Lack of sleep
  • Peripheral neuropathy (a complication of diabetes)
  • Raynaud’s Syndrome
  • Insufficient body fat
  • Blood circulation problems

In addition, it’s been shown that regularly consuming alcohol can cause the body to feel cold. This is due to the fact that alcohol widens blood vessels, thereby resulting in increased blood flow to the skin. This causes an initial warm flush that soon gives way to a drop in body temperature as all the heat escapes.

Why do some people always feel hot?

Various physical and hormonal factors can cause a person to feel chronically hot. These include:

  • Perimenopause
  • Menopause
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating

It’s also worth mentioning that since babies and seniors sweat less, they’re less prone to feeling overheated.

When in doubt, consult a doctor

Feeling too cold or hot is never fun. However, if you’re shivering or sweating excessively and don’t know why, you won’t solve the problem by turning up the heat or air conditioning (though you’ll undoubtedly up your energy bill). The best thing to do is make an appointment with your doctor. A physician should be able to diagnose the issue and recommend treatment options, such as by prescribing medication or recommending dietary changes.
